A ground source heat pump, with solar PV and battery storage, for farmhouse renovation and barn conversion in the Yorkshire Dales.
From its idyllic location nestled within the Howgill Fells on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, it is clear to see why our clients fell in love with the derelict farmhouse when it came up for auction. However, having been neglected for many years it required complete renovation. The adjoining barn was ideal for conversion to additional living accommodation as a second phase.
With no mains gas supply and an isolated location, Mr and Mrs N were eager to explore all options and approached Fervo for advice.
Following an initial site visit and discussion with the client to fully understand their requirements and aspirations, proposals were provided for a number of alternative heating solutions. After discussing the options, a NIBE 11.45 ground source heat pump was chosen to provide 100% of the space heating and hot water requirements for the 5-bedroom property.
The installation commenced by burying 600m of ground collector in the adjoining field, connected to the plant room in the farmhouse by 70m of header pipe. The heat pump installation followed, including a 300-litre hot water cylinder and 100-litre buffer cylinder. The heat pump was connected to a mixed underfloor and radiator heating circuit.
To complement the ground source heat pump, a solar PV and battery storage system was installed on a new-build detached garage, workshop and store. This comprised an “in-roof” PV array of 10 x 340W panels coupled to a 3kW Huawei hybrid inverter and 5kW battery.
